OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute. OpenOffice.org is sponsored by Sun Microsystems, which is the primary contributor of code to the Project. Over 180,000 people from every nearly every curve of the globe have joined this Project with the idea of creating the best possible office suite that all can use. They do so under the auspices of "open source."

Can't live without it, so much better then microsofts products, just cause the file format is smaller, compact, but very useful. I rember reading they won an award for it.

Here is some info on that: http://www.openoffice.org/awards/index.html

Never once have i had this crash on me, or ever have a problem, its a sturdy but useable program.

The OpenOffice website reports this as being a release candidate, not final.

Website shows 2.2.0 as stable, but the Mirrors are up and running. look at the ftp directorys, it is stable! Website is updated when all Major Mirrors are updated.

Yeah.. It's expensive but luckily I got it from work for about 28€.. Home user program...
If you're at school or at work they might have some discounts.
But anyway there's nothing wrong with open office.

In my opinion, that argument held water until the arrival of Office 2007.

The student suite may be a bit out of range for some of you. But it's worth it though some of the new techniques and time savers I found and got through using the 2007 suite applications.

I like using this program. I just wish it didn't do the Apple treatment when started; i.e. take forever to load up.

Agreed. I used to use it on a now ageing laptop, but was frustrated by the load times. Perversely, Office 2007 loads much quicker.

This isn't a slight against OOo, I think it's a great suite. We use it at work because you can export files directly to PDF without any other plugins/software.

Disable Java support. OOo will open faster.

Great program. Doesn't quite match up to MS Office in some respects, but that said, MS Office has screwed me about a few times too many.

And being a student, IMO all free stuff owns
