Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks. Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, spell checking, tabbed conversations, and more. Pidgin runs on a number of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Qtopia (Sharp Zaurus and iPaq).

Sweet! Thank's for the info downloading now.

Nice they slimmed down the Message Box also no single tab when only one conversation is open, very nice. Can't wait until the next release Pidgin is coming along nicely..

yeah i noticed in the last 2 or so releases they changed the look slightly in message windows.

this is a great all-in-one chat program... and the only one i use.

The chat window is starting to come along nicely. There's two issues, though:

1. In Vista, there's a weird beveled border between the content area and the window border.
2. There's a redundancy in the tab system. With multiple tabs open, it shows the name of the person on the tab and above your conversation. It looks silly:

I think that redundancy is because you're IMing yourself, no?

No.

It shows aliases on the tabs and actual account names below them. They will be the same if you don't use aliases.

Does anyone know how to put a "SEND" button on the IM windows?

Trillian has one, and it makes some things so much easier.

You can't.

Press the enter key. They have been trying for ages to tidy up the interface and right now it is pretty clean and slick... why crap it up with useless stuff like a send button?

Just because you don't use the Send button doesn't mean other people don't either.

I frequently share pictures and links with friends. With Trillian, I can quickly click a link, paste it into the chat, and click "Send".

Three quick clicks and I've shared some enjoyment. If I'm reading a news story or looking at a forum thread full of funny pictures, I won't usually have my hands on the keyboard. Using just the mouse makes things a lot easier.

Not having something as simple as a SEND button - along with programmers and even users who are arrogant enough to think that NO ONE should even use a Send button will keep me and probably others from ever taking Pidgin seriously.

It already took them an embarrassing amount of time to get the program to even save window positions.

nice using this after a failed intent to use miranda IM (use it once customized it worked ok after upgrading it started crashing), pidgin works as it should, of course there are many things that i dont like about gaim but its ok and it works.

things that i dont like in gaim or pidgin:
1- gtk
2- no themes or extensions or plugins
3- trillian contact list organization was good , here its a mess...

I still can't get this to work. Tried out every version since 2.0 and always got the same error message when attempting to launch it.

I wish there were some good status notification skins for this.

In 2.1.0 I couldnt reorder the buddy list to how I wanted to.

Did they fix this?

And is there anyway to restore the text formatting toolbar in the IM window?
