Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks. Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, spell checking, tabbed conversations, and more. Pidgin runs on a number of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Qtopia (Sharp Zaurus and iPaq).

Uhm, I'd still prefer Miranda. Pidgin has a lot of options, but it has too many unneeded stuff and too less configuration options.

Miranda is solid... although it just seems to "blah" as far as it's overall interface in my opinion, thats the main thing i find lacking in Miranda... but as far as tiny chat programs are concerned Miranda is pretty much king.... cause for someone who just wants chatting and the smallest program possible and dont care about anything else... i think Miranda is a good choice.

i just think "overall" Pidgin is better (especially if it's just a install and use) cause it's quick enough and has a good interface and does pretty much what i need it to do right out of the box.

plus lately they been getting updates out quite often

I agree. I downloaded this client today, used it for a good 5 hours before seeing the light and returning to Miranda.

Miranda does offer a lot more options than Pidgin IMO.
