that made my laugh. The interface is a bit awkward but all the features work great if you know how to use them. GIMP is an awesome program. I think it is great that this program exists but: who exactly is this program for? Graphic Designers? If I made my living by producing graphics then I would want the very best, and right now that is Adobe Photoshop. Sure it costs a lot, but it doesn't cost that much considering how much a professional should be making. It is cheep compared to the tools used in most professions.

For everyone else, it is all about Paint.NET IMHO. If you are not into graphic design, then you are probably only interested in cropping/resizing/color adjusting of images. Paint.NET does all that and more with a slick responsive interface.

Whoever came up with the name must have been a right 'gimp'.

Most others don't know what it means.

gimp is a pimp except its gay...hence the name g-imp. mostly likely to be used by one of the members of the g-unit.

but seriously the name sucks.

the program is nice. but the interface is crap.. they need to tie up those windows. sorta like the gimpshop mod.

Actually since it's what you see an interact with I'd say that the interface is the most important part of all. I also agree with the above poster about the name though. GIMP is pretty terrible and anyone who's seen Pulp Fiction probably has a reasonably good idea of what it means. A new interface would be great though.

Up until now, I was pretty sure that GIMP was created/released before Pulp Fiction. However, the history listed on the official GIMP site is rather vague about the creation date. Wikipedia lists it as 1995, which is a year after Pulp Fiction.

Yea, tell me about it! This is why those other guys do the Gimpshop thing, so you can use the GIMP but with the commands and all more in a Photoshop style.

Still, it does work quite well and, once you get used to it, it's a great program.

Its acceptance for many people is a problem because they erroneously think it is 'harder' than Photoshop. The truth is, if you start learning the GIMP, it takes no more time to learn it as it takes to learn Photoshop. But because lots of people learn Photoshop first (and seem to forget how much time went into learning it), they think the GIMP is 'harder'. Some Photoshop users make the further error, also arising for a remarkable ability to forget the effort that went into learning Photoshop, that Photoshop is somehow more 'intuitive' or 'natural' (never trust these words when discussing software!.

This is the same error Windows users make about Linux. People forget what went into learning Windows, so they think Linux is harder. Because they've put so much time into learning Windows, they think Windows is more 'intuitive' and 'natural' (again, another delusion).

A photoshop users can works without a trouble with paintshoppro and other painter products,such paint.net but gimp.

So, can you blame photoshop users or the awful gimp interface?.

And for linux vs windows, in windows you don't need to edit any cryptic .conf file, may be to edit a single .ini file, edit the registry (pretty easy) and nothing much else. I don't known if Windows is intuitive and natural but linux isn't.

All this stuff is easy because that is what you learnt. You learnt it, ergo it is easy. That is the point. The exact same thing goes for the whole 'intuitive' and 'natural' piece of marketing rhetoric. It's ****. You come to feel that what you LEARN is intuitive and natural. That is the point. This is a revelation for those who can mentally digest it.

I used Windows most of my life and I was and remain effing good at it at all levels. I now use Linux. It took me a day (a DAY) of mental retraining to get up to my previous 'Windows' level of understanding. Now I can do things I never thought possible with an OS. It has lots of the cool things I loved about Windows and it lets me delve deeper. If I'd have started with Linux, it'd have been easier than Windows to learn, that much I know is true.

If you can't take two steps back to see this simple truth, I bloody well can't help you. Just keep letting the marketing be your guide
