OpenOffice.org is an open-source, multiplatform and multilingual office suite comparable with MS Office.

It is compatible with all other major office suites and is free to download, use, and distribute. It was previously known as StarOffice before it became an open-source project. OpenOffice comes with OpenWriter - a word processor, OpenCalc - a spreadsheet and OpenImpress - a presentational package.

* The first office suite to use the new OASIS OpenDocument format, the future-proof international standard for office software
* Easy to install, with a whole new look and feel, matched to the type of computer in use
* More intuitive, more easy to use than ever, with a host of new usability features
* Complete with Base: an easy-to-use database manager with a fully integrated database
* Compatible with other software packages - now understands even obscure and rarely used features in major competitors.

You may download OpenOffice.org completely free of any licence fees, use it for any purpose - private, educational, government and public administration, commercial - and pass on copies free of charge to family, friends, students, employees, etc.

There is no such thing as "future proof".

The Betamax was designed to be future proof, and here we are now with Blu-ray.

you forgot teh Mini-Disc and teh DCC too mate

Maybe "future resistant"?

I see it the same as water proof, or weather proof, well most * proofs.
I dont think proof even means what you are trying to imply. It is just at the time the argument could be made/accepted that it will be good into the future. It never stipulates how far into the future. Replace the word future with water and it is exactly the same.

Where's the new interface?

It's right there, looking at you from what I can tell all they did was update the logo and updated all the icons from the crappy Office 2k style icons to more colourful ones.

Personally I really like the tabbed interface of IBM Lotus Symphony, but OpenOffice has better file format support and it also includes a few extra apps Symphony just doesn't have, so I switched back to OpenOffice. While I prefer Office 2007, I find OpenOffice a good, much cheaper (i.e. free) alternative to get an Office suite on my new laptop (got Office 2007 on the desktop, which is the main machine anyway)

Download: OpenOffice 3.0 RC3

Shouldn't that read "Download: OpenOffice 3.0 RC4"?

RC4 is a bit dodgy if you ask me, I couldn't even install it! I installed it as administrator but it goes "installation failed, you do not have sufficient access rights" it already has admin rights...what could possibly be higher then that? I just deleted it and will continue to use RC3 (the auto update feature is broken for me too...)

I see they have made that common advertising faux pas:

Best of all, OpenOffice.org 3 can be downloaded and used entirely free of any licence fees.

So what they are saying is that compared to the features, the stability and the interface, the best thing about the product is really that it's free. In that case, I'll pass thanks. I'd like the best thing about it to be something a little more convincing than that.
