GIMP 2.6.1

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.

GIMP 2.6 is an important release from a development point of view. It features changes to the user interface addressing some often received complaints, and a tentative integration of GEGL, the graph based image processing library that will eventually bring high bit-depth and non-destructive editing to GIMP.

There's this kid on YouTube that's great with GIMP. He puts out these great tutorials, you should check them out.

Just noticed that only the source is available for 2.6.1 now, the download link still points to 2.6.0.

It's going to take some getting used to the new layout, because I got used to the old one, but it does make more sense in many ways.

Now if more people would make more plugins for effects and editing.

To each his own I guess, but I don't see what all the hype is about. This is the worst editing program I have ever used in my 20-years of computing via Unix, Microsoft, and Apple. v2.6.1 won't even automatically resize the pallete when doing something as simple as rotating an image 90 degrees. Thats just ridiculous.
