GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

The more time I spend with GIMP the more I appreciate it. It's staggering this is free.

Linux is free. Is that "staggering"?

I never really got on with the floating boxes on it, prefer to have it all confined inside one window. I'm sure before there was an add-on that did this to it and also gave it more PS style menus for placement of tools.

Yup, it's called Gimpshop and can be found at www.gimpshop.com, but I don't think it's been updated for a while.

I've never got on with GIMP, tried it a number of times over the years. For me you can't beat Paint.net

I personally think Gimp is much more powerful than Paint.net

It is certainly more powerful and feature filled than Paint.net. However, Paint.net's simplicity and consistent UI makes it easier for me to get my digital image tasks done. My preference is Paint.net.

Sweet, new version of GIMP. This is probably my most used Open Source program next to Firefox.

Thanks for the thumbs up!

Gimp would be so much better if they ditched GTK - at least for the windows port.

Gimp is not bad for what it is, but personally I cannot stand the floating toolbars etc it drives me nuts! (I know it has a purpose though).

I've tried out 2.0 and 2.5 so far and found that while you can do quite a lot with it, the UI is an utter pain in the ass.
It might be a decent alternative to Photoshop et al. if someone would actually program a completely new, usable UI for it.

I find the UI to be quite useable in newer versions, even though it still feels a little awkward with the floating boxes and they're not confined, at least they're grouped now, so its not too hard to adapt to, and it's free.

I've been using it for quite a while, there're photoshop keyboard shortcuts you can download for this too.

I love Gimp it is the best program ever.
