iTunes 9 rumors suggest social networking features, Blu-Ray

Advertisement (Why?)
If there's a technology rumor around the Internet, there's a pretty good chance it's about Apple; the company prides itself on keeping announcements secret, and with that, there are plenty of people who are willing to reveal information. This time around, we've got our hands on some rumors about the next version of Apple's media software, iTunes 9, and some of the features it could potentially pack. Boy Genius Report has the details.

They describe their source as "pretty reliable", who has tipped them off with a bunch of various upcoming features in the software. Firstly, Blu-Ray support is expected; Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, previously described the technology as a "bag of hurt", though now the company may be making a turn-around on that, as the format is becoming increasingly adopted. To add to this, it's expected that Blu-Ray will be included within the upcoming iMac revamp, so there's a pretty good chance that it'll happen.

There's another potential new feature that would satisfy a lot of people, and that is a new way of visually arranging iPhone/iPod touch applications within iTunes. It's not quite explained how this will work, but either way, it would most likely be better than the current solution. Last of all, it's expected that iTunes 9 will feature integration with Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm. BGR says they weren't very clearly described, but it's pretty obvious how they'll work, and the purpose they'll serve.

If you're keen on this, it's expected to hit around September, as that's when the iPod refresh usually happens.

how is it getting blu ray when apple still dosnt support it at all? Need to run windows in order to have bluray support. So if there's blu ray support coming, it's a major OS feature, not just an itunes patch

iTunes (and related components) is pretty much a major feature in OS X. So if they came up with Blu-ray support an iTunes update seems like a likely way of people getting it.

Either that or it'll be a feature for Snow Lepoard.
#1.2 Rolith on 08 Aug 2009 - 22:07
I'm guessing it'd need a OS patch, or at least drivers... not just new media software.

Yeah, I may be wrong, but doesn't Mac OS use iTunes itself to handle media? So adding the feature to iTunes would add it to the OS. Unless I'm wrong, with is certainly possible.

I belive QuickTime is the core component that does all the media work.

Which means iTunes also uses Quicktime as its backend, which makes it a fair enough thing to mix up

Actually it's not. iTunes is just a nice front end for the QuickTime framework. Next to that iTunes is almost never updated together with a major Mac OS X release. They're basically two different products.
#1.7 Shadrack on 09 Aug 2009 - 18:21
I thought that it would just be about licensing. Similar to DVD, it is one thing to crack open a bluray data disc, while it is entirely different thing to play licensed bluray video content.

Which is why I said "and related components", meaning QuickTime, which is mentioned again in a lower post. Bad wording on my part.

They will have to release some hardware as well.

Is bluray that popular anyway, or is it just a passing fad.

Social Networking on your media player?! Bloaterific!

That would be like Nero including a sound editor with their CD burning suite!

... oh wait.
#2.1 Erich on 09 Aug 2009 - 01:18
Actually, I think this makes sense. I hate itunes at the moment. But if they properly integrated it into a facebook application (streamline syncing photos from my iphone onto facebook and such) I would probably start using it more than my webbrowser.

It won't be for everyone... but anyone who is addicted to social networking I could see them making itunes their primary computer application.

Instead of wanting your media player to only play music, why not embrace the fact it is evolving and wish it played all sorts of media? I'd much rather it be called iMedia than iTunes and I'd also rather it played every type of media, including DVDs and Blu-Ray discs.

Don't you watch films and TV shows? If so, why would you want multiple applications for all your different types of media?

Guess I'd have to pick up a Power Mac to be able to install any new parts. Or If I wanted to use a BD burner with an iMac... it would have to be external. That's BS.

iMacs are actually designed to make it fairly easy to replace drives, and there are probably some slot-load BD drives on the market that would work nicely.

Yeah, they added video on later, and it was already an established product, so they just keep the original name. Just like Microsoft Word also lets you edit pictures... BUT IT SAYS WORD!

I'm not too happy about Twitter support; the last thing I want to see is masses of songs being spammed everywhere D:

But people will, and the result will be your Twitter stream loses just about all useful content - that is, if your friends are stuck with iTunes for whatever reason.
#5.3 Calum J. R. on 09 Aug 2009 - 08:16
I agree, Sam. Not that I use Twitter much yet (), but if I did, I wouldn't want my stream filled up with people's songs constantly changing, unless Twitter did something like seperate this content to a different tab on the homepage.

I'm sort of hoping that's how the Facebook integration will work; I'm hoping users can set it up so each song they listen to will be published to a seperate tab on their profile, rather than their main feed. I'm also hoping that users could set it so their top songs and other content are shown on that tab, seeing as though the Last.FM applications that are around aren't very good.

I use the Zune Software now and the Zune Social, anyway, so I'm hoping Microsoft take note of this social networking integration

If people spam their now playing on Twitter, stop following them. Twitter is what you want to make of it. It's power is in it simplicity. If you want to use it for news, you can. If you want to use it for social networking, you can. If you want to use it to find new music, you can.

I can't say much for the mac OS platform, but iTunes on Windows is one of the worst applications out there. It's horridly bloated - it's an app store, music store, music player, media player, and device synchronizer - and runs like crap.

Jack of all trades, master of none... what's another feature or two...

Sloooooooooow. Even on the fastest macs.

And the lack of features in MSN for Mac is ridiculous.

Indeed. I use to complain about iTunes in Windows being so terrible and how crappy Apple software was for Windows... that is until I saw the terrible effort by Microsoft in brining Windows Media Player to Mac. What a steaming pile that was. Fortunately, they gave up and now support a 3rd party developer to bring Windows Media content to Mac.

Office 2004 was a little better (I have not tried 2008 yet). But for a spreadsheet and word process it did seem laggy for what should have been more than adequate hardware. Entourage 2004 was just terrible though.

IMHO Microsoft dropped the ball with WMP after version 6.4. That is when they tried to do everything, rather than just be a movie player. And it became damn ugly. Lots of people like if though.

Thats cause alot of them cannot be bothered experimenting on other apps. I cant understand why Microsoft won't use the Zune MP as its default app.

Pfft, forget new features, apple needs to work on getting iTunes actually useable on Windows. It's the worst port of any application i've ever seen. It randomly reverts to a Windows 3.1 interface, it takes 10 seconds before it opens any section in it, and it's got a terrible Mac OS X/Vista hybrid interface that probably contributes to it being slow as hell. Ugh.

Ditto that.
I heard somewhere it basically renders the whole UI from a bunch of bitmaps which it has to redraw every time you do.. anything.
The delay when clicking pretty much anything in the left column is the worst part.

Finally Songbird has media organization and folder watching (which iTunes doesn't), as well as a fair amount of iPod support. I switched I just don't sync my iPod Touch anymore.
Thanks to iTunes, I refuse to buy iPods/iPhones from now on.

I concur. It's the most sluggish application on the PC I've ever used. Fix the performance issues and I'll be happy. I don't mind new features... nobody is forcing me to use them after all... so long as they dont worsen performance then I'm not against them.

It's no longer there since Vista 64-bit.

Doesn't really hurt to keep it in there for the 32-bit builds of Vista and 7 for the minority who continue to use 16-bit applications in tandem with modern applications.

What good will Blu-ray support do for the so-called millions of Mac owners with Macs that don't have Blu-ray drives in 'em?

Unless Apple is planning to introduce new Macs in the next two months (September is about the time for the fall "event" where they introduce their media products, iPods, Apple TV, potentially a new Mac mini this time, etc), then this is effectively useless. It's entirely possible that they might delay this introduction well into January for a bigger event but, it remains to be seen.

I know, they should never do anything unless it makes everyone happy. And of course, they should bring out the hardware first, who cares about software to play the things. I just want my blu-ray drive to have no functionality.

I'd rather they fix iTunes for Windows first than add "features". Stop iTunes from randomly renaming files to "01 title.mp3" even though I have already told it not to. Fix the UI under Windows XP/Vista/7 so that its actually responsive. I do not want to have to put the kettle on each time I click on the left menu. Oh gawd see what happens....I will stop now but each time I give iTunes a chance its back to MediaMonkey I go for media to sync with my iPhone and iTunes all you are good for is synching with my Outlook. If this will come in an iTunes update, isn't it about time they changed its name in that case? I know it wouldn't happen, but calling an application that links to social networking sites, lets you download TV shows and films, is the primary front-end to the iPhone, etc etc after a music player is a little daft now. I know it originally only did this, but its getting a bit silly don't you think?

Features are good, but this is like its just the one-size-fits-all program. What's the point? Eggs in one basket guys, come on.

Just call it "i". Everyones happy then

I think iTunes for Windows lost its way after v6. I remember using it with my iPod 20GB, and thought that it was reasonably fast although not as fast as other media players. Still, adequate and fast enough. Fast forward to today where I now use it for my iPhone, and we find what has become quite the steaming pile for Windows. It still works and isn't buggy, but the interface is sooo slow to todays standards. You would think that the quad-core and 6GB of ram would buy me a little more performance in a media player. Apple needs to iron these sorts of things out in incremental patches before they subject us to new features that will no doubt slow things down further.

Ah well, we will have to wait and see. Maybe everyone on the Internet and in these forums are overreacting (*gasp*, shock, horror!.

Let's see how much slower it becomes. One of the worse piece of software that so many people use because they bought a gimped Ipod.
