GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

Yep, it should. Latest release is 2.6.7.

Wow. Still called "The Gimp". Nothing fits into a professional environment better than derogatory terms for crippled people or sub-servant sexual slave names.

Keep it up guys! You'll have Photoshop dethroned in no time! Graphics companies are just lining up to bring in The Gimp!

I would think if the developers seriously cared about their project, they would change its name to something a little less weird and/or offensive.

I agree with you entirely. Even if you ignore the social implications of such names, it just leaves the user in a state of confusion when looking for a product to fit a need. How in the hell does GIMP tell the user that it would be the product they need to manipulate images? It's elitist madness.

i completely agree, that's the problem with a lot of OS software. strange names that don't mean anything to the average person. forking projects for almost no reason is ridiculous too. if you have an idea for a "better" notepad, why not contribute to one that already exists? instead, we have 1000 different text editors...so much wasted time with reinventing the wheel!

Wow do we have to be politically correct on everything we use ? This political correctness is beginning to reach ridiculous levels. So we don't have the freedom with names either. I am sure Microsoft went around asking what name is good before picking Bing as the name for the new search engine.

All that matters is if the software does what it claims to do and how well it does that. Apart from that nothing matters.

I don't see why the developers of GIMP should have the change the name because you interpret it in a way which makes it offensive to you.
It isn't called "The Gimp", it's called GIMP. It's an acronym. The developers did not intend the acronym or name to be related to 'gimp' as a derogatory word, which is itself a slang word. Look gimp up in the dictionary, it doesn't mean "crippled people or sub-servant sexual slave names". Are you trolling or serious?

Gimp standards for "GNU Image Manipulation Program".
It wasn't intentional naming, but its something you should bring up with the development community.

The Gimp community is very geecky, example they closely follow the stable / unstable version number, Odd = Beat / Even = Stable / Production.
That's why 2.7x is the unstable version, once they get it to a point it's stable it will become 2.8

i doubt it was not intentional. why not ImageMan or even GIM, or Gims (s for software). obviously, it's a program, you downloaded it, and are running it on a computer. you don't need to say "software," "program" or any other obvious thing in the name.
