Apple updated their line-up of Mac Mini computers last week and the updates have rendered the Mac Mini a surprisingly powerful little computer. Other World Computing, or OWC as they are known, can make the Mac Mini considerably stronger still. The company claims to have verified that the 2011 Mac Mini is capable of accepting and utilizing 16GB of RAM should it be loaded with such a large amount.
Better yet, is the fact the company will offer to install this RAM in your Mac Mini; for a fee, as you would expect. What might not be expected is the pricing of the increase. OWC"s RAM increases prices are as follows:
- OWC 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory KitKit (2x 2GB memory modules): $37.99
- OWC 8GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Kit (2x 4GB memory modules): $79.99
- OWC 12GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Kit (8GB + 4GB memory modules): $749.99
- OWC 16GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Kit (2x 8GB memory modules): $1399.99
Astonishingly, the company is retailing the 16GB of RAM memory modules for 1,400 USD - roughly 852GBP or 965EUR (this can be verified via their website). This price is actually higher than the cost of a brand new Mac Mini, in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Starting at $599 in the USA and £529 in the UK, the total cost of a Mac Mini with only the base parts is close to £2,000. A base model iMac retails for £999 in the UK, and the Mac Pro starts at £2041.
While they may not come with such an extreme amount of RAM, the specifications in the higher model iMacs are more likely to facilitate the usage of all the RAM available. As would be expected, guides to installing RAM in the unibody Mac Mini models already exist, and have been uploaded to YouTube.
