Way back in June 2015, Microsoft announced details of a partnership with virtual reality specialists Oculus. Each Oculus Rift headset would come with an Xbox One controller and wireless adapter, and Microsoft said that owners would be able to stream Xbox One games to the headset too.
Today, Microsoft revealed that Xbox One game streaming will finally come to the Oculus Rift in a few weeks" time, eighteen months after its original announcement.
"Today marks an evolution in our ongoing partnership with Oculus, as Rift owners will be able to stream their Xbox One library to Rift with the new Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app," Microsoft said. The app connects the headset to the Xbox One via your wireless network, streaming the console"s video output into one of three VR environments: "Citadel", "Retreat" or "Dome".
With native support for the Rift in Windows 10, including DirectX 12 support, Microsoft promises that "made-for-VR games on Windows 10 will have the fastest frame rates and top peformance."
The new Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app will be available to download free from the Oculus Store on December 12.
