The webOS platform may have fallen, but there’s still plenty of smartphone action out there. While HP put all of its eggs in one basket, Samsung’s approach of spreading its mobile portfolio across multiple operating systems has undoubtedly been paying off, and an alleged roadmap, revealed by Telefonino.net, appears to indicate that Samsung has no plans to change its winning strategy, with new devices on the way this year powered by Windows Phone 7, Android, and Samsung’s own in-house smartphone platform, bada.
The three Bada handsets are fairly unremarkable in terms of their specifications, from the S5380 with its 3.2” display and 2MP camera to the S8600 Wave III, with 3GB of on-board storage and a 5MP camera, although it does at least have a 4” Super AMOLED screen. All three devices are powered by Bada 2.0, and include Bluetooth 3.0.
Much more interesting is the line-up of nine new Android devices set to arrive before the end of the year. By far the most exciting of these is the I9250, an Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) handset with a huge 4.65” Super AMOLED display and HD resolution (1280x720). It’s apparently due at the end of November.
A few weeks before that, the I9220 is expected, also including HD resolution, though on a slightly smaller 4.3” Super AMOLED display. Powered by Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread), it’ll have a 1.4GHz dual-core processor and 8MP camera.
On the tablet front, the P6200 is due around the end of October, with 7 inches of Super AMOLED goodness, though the resolution will only be SVGA (1024x600). Powered by Honeycomb (Android 3.x), it’ll include 3MP rear-facing and 2MP front-facing cameras, and will have built in HDSPA support; the P6210 will be a Wi-Fi-only variant of the same device.
And what of Windows Phone 7? Well, the roadmap points to only one WP7 device arriving this year, the i8350 Omnia W. Due to arrive in October, and powered by Mango, the specs seem pretty unremarkable: 3.7” WVGA (480x800), 1GHz processor, 5MP camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. Further details, such as whether the display will be Super AMOLED, or which processor will be used, aren’t yet available.
Now, bear in mind that all of the details on this leaked roadmap are unconfirmed, and therefore subject to change; we also don’t know whether this list is complete, so be sure to take what you read with a pinch of salt or three. The full list is below; note that the numbers in brackets – e.g. (W42) - refer to the expected week of release in 2011 for each handset.
