The "affordable" Tesla Model 3 was only announced on March 31st but already it has received 276,000 reservations according to Elon Musk who has been tweeting regularly to keep people updated on how many reservations had been made at different intervals.
The reservations for the car are not actually pre-orders. To make a reservation, customers pay up $1,000 (£1,000) to show their commitment to buying the car. Deliveries of the vehicle are slated to begin in late 2017.
Musk is hoping that the company can produce 500,000 vehicles per year once production is at full capacity. Judging by the amount of reservations made so far, it looks like he will meet his target. The company will have its work cut out for it producing so many cars, last year it delivered 50,580 cars, mostly of the Model S saloon which became the best selling wholly-electric vehicle worldwide.
Some key features of the Model 3, boasted by Tesla include: 215 miles (346 km) per charge, 0 – 60 mph in under six seconds, five seats, a 5-star safety rating in all categories, autopilot safety features, and capable of supercharging.
