2D MOBA Awesomenauts to go free-to-play in May, major update 4.0 goes live in preparation

Today, Ronimo Games announced that its cartoony MOBA, Awesomenauts, will be going free-to-play on PC next month, and its new trailer accompanied by its recognizable theme is seen above.

For those who are unfamiliar, the game is a 3vs3 multiplayer online battle arena similar to DOTA 2 and Heroes of the Storm (which also received a major update recently). However, Awesomenauts calls itself a " MOBA-lite ", due to its accessibility as well as the incorporation of 2D platforming and fighting game elements.

In preparation for the free-to-play transition, the developer has launched the game"s 4.0 update today, which includes a new progression system, and more customization options among other highlights. It also brings along a newly overhauled tutorial designed to ease new players into the game, a difficult task to accomplish even for a self-described MOBA-lite.

Moreover, the update introduces Awesomepoints as the game"s new currency, which are earned via playing against other players or in the new co-op mode. This currency can be used for unlocking new characters, and customization items such as portraits, as well as drop pods. However, character skins will remain locked behind a paywall, requiring real money.

The developer isn"t forgetting the game"s existing player base either, as everyone who has played Awesomenauts before April 26 will receive an exclusive Founder portrait and a medal.

In addition, players who own the game and both its expansions before May 24 will be upgraded to the new "All Nauts Pack", which has replaced the regular version of the game on Steam. The pack is also available for purchase to new players, and guarantees access to all currently released characters as well as any upcoming ones. Lastly, the developer is also giving a 40% discount on the expansions for existing players who would like to upgrade to the All Nauts Pack.

Awesomenauts 4.0 update is available now, and the game is scheduled to go free-to-play on Steam, May 24.

More information about these changes can be found on the game"s website.
