A few days ago, Alex McCarthy of sports radio station talkSport reported that that the next game in the WWE game franchise, WWE 2K21, had been cancelled. However, the official Twitter account for the wrestling game series promised that some "exciting" news concerning the franchise would be revealed on Monday.
True to its word, today 2K Games announced that a new title which will be joining the WWE gaming franchise, WWE 2K Battlegrounds. Apart from the expected release window, 2K also posted a teaser trailer and shared some details about the new WWE title.
According to the press release, WWE 2K Battlegrounds will feature a brand new gaming experience compared to all the other games in the WWE video game series.
"Let’s begin with a surprise… We’ve got two words for you: NEW GAME! We’re thrilled to introduce you to WWE 2K Battlegrounds, a completely new WWE gaming experience that will feature arcade-style action and over-the-top Superstar designs, environments and moves. We’re focusing on social pick-up-and-play fun, but with plenty of depth for those who want to get way into it."
The video game publisher also cleared the air and confirmed that WWE 2K21 would not be happening this year. Additionally, 2K also revealed that in an effort to improve the quality of its future WWE games, it has hired Patrick Gilmore as executive producer of Visual Concepts - the developer behind the WWE 2K franchise.
