3dfx Interactive might be coming back from the dead after 20 years, but evidence is sketchy

Recently, the most powerful GPU ever developed by the now-defunct-and-acquired 3dfx Interactive was recreated by ModLabs with the power of reverse-engineering. We are talking about the Voodoo5 6000 Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) which packed quad VSA-100 GPUs in SLI, running at 166MHz and featuring 128MB of VRAM.

However, as it turns out, the Voodoo5 6000 may not be the only thing related to 3dfx to have been resurrected. If this seemingly dodgy tweet is to be believed, then the company itself might be coming back from the dead too, apparently on the 5th of August when we are told to expect "an major announcement".

The handle claims to be the official account of 3dfx but the tweet has a silly grammatical error. Also, the image used in the tweet is a fan-made one (by a DeviantArt user vermaden). And when 3dfx Interactive declared bankruptcy in the year 2000, Nvidia had picked up most of its valuable assets, like the SLI technology. This means that if the tweet is authentic, the firm is probably back to square one and will have to start all over again, which seems highly unlikely.

Regardless of whether or not this is authentic, it would be rather refreshing to have another player in the PC graphics card market for a four-horse race as Intel also will soon be joining the high-end discrete GPU market in a meaningful way. That said, the tweet is sketchy at best, so it would be advisable to take this rumor with a truckload of salt.
