WhatsApp announced that its users sent a whopping 63 billion messages on New Year"s Eve. The record-breaking number included 7.9 billion images and 2.4 billion videos - numbers which WhatsApp wasn"t anywhere close to just a year ago, even though it reported having a billion active users back in February of 2016.
The Facebook-owned company revealed early last year that, across all of Facebook and WhatsApp combined, there was a total of 60 billion messages going out everyday. That number has now been shattered by WhatsApp alone while both Facebook and WhatsApp continue to grow in users and popularity.
Other services like Telegram saw as much as 12 billion messages sent everyday as of September 2015 have more than 100 million monthly active users. Apple"s iMessage is likely to also see tens of billions of messages sent through their service everyday.
WhatsApp had 500 million monthly active users as of April 2014, a number which became 600 million monthly active users as of August 2014 and slowly climbing to 900 million monthly active users a year later before reaching one billion active users in February 2016.
WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for $22 billion.
