Microsoft is on a roll in terms of its Xbox 360 business. During their final CES 2012 keynote address on Monday, the company announced that it has now sold 66 million Xbox 360 console units worldwide since it launched in November 2005.
In addition, Microsoft said that it has now sold a total of 18 milllion units of the Kinect motion gesture game controller for the Xbox 360 since it was launched in November 2010. That"s a huge number for an add-on product. Usually a hardware addition that"s launched well after the console"s launch is lucky to be bought by 10 to 15 percent of that console"s users. In Kinect"s case the amount of units sold is close to 30 percent of Xbox 360 users.
Microsoft also said during the keynote address that it now has over 40 million subscribers to Xbox Live. As usual, Microsoft did not break down how many of those subscribers use the free Silver service and how many actually pay for the Xbox Live Gold service.
In related news, Joystiq reports that News Corporation is developing a streaming video app that will be released for the Xbox 360. It will offer video from Fox News, The Wall Street Journal and IGN; but there"s no release date yet for that app.
