A Printer that Delivers 1,000 Pages a Minute?

Imagine an ink-jet printer head that could theoretically spit out 1,000 pages a minute, or more. The JeTrix project, which is still in a very early stage of development, is expected to be available commercially in two years. This, of course, will only remain true if funding and product engineering go as planned. Two research engineers, Moshe Einat and Nissim Einat at the College of Judea and Samaria, claim the printer works like an LCD screen: spitting out pixels of ink instead of pixels of light.

Their basic design is small, but they have proven one large printer head can be created to satisfy a huge printing demand. Typical printer heads have to move across a page; this print head is equal or greater to the size of a page. This design eliminates the typical ink-jet printer obstacles which lead to limited print quality and print speed: as the number of nozzles increases stable ink-flow conditions are harder to maintain, the motion of standard print heads and drop-ejection rate. A 12x12cm printer head and 57,600 nozzles were tested to confirm proper ink flow. The printer is expected to be used in industry, offices and even homes. The brothers anticipate revolutionary applications such as in-store book printing, personalized newspapers and so on.
