Acer is definitely upping its game in the 2-in-1 department. After a busy autumn announcing new products, Acer has introduced a new convertible. An upgrade to last year’s model, the new Aspire Switch 12 S has improved specs, especially for data transfer and display capabilities.
Inside, the convertible runs Windows 10, sports a 6th gen Intel Skylake-based Core M processor and carries a RealSense 3D camera. Fast charging is supplied via the USB Type-C connection, while data transfer speeds, via Thunderbolt 3, go up to 40 Gbps with compatible external storage and other peripherals.
The new laptop includes some impressive display specs. The standard 12.5 inch Gorilla Glass 4 display will run at 1920x1080, with 4K resolution as an optional upgrade. The computer"s Thunderbolt 3 on USB-C can drive up to two 4K external displays. The new laptop will also be compatible with an upcoming Acer Graphics Dock to enhance graphics capabilities.
Outside, the 7.85mm chassis is made of aluminum with a black finish, but it’s not the lightest laptop out there, weighing in at 1400 grams or 3.09 pounds (the tablet by itself is 800 grams or 1.76 pounds). The two segments attach magnetically via the Snap Hinge connection, while also providing a charging connection to the keyboard unit. The hinge allows four modes: regular notebook, tablet, stand display and tent (shown above).
Acer says the Switch 12 S will be available this February in North America starting at $999, in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at €1199, and in China at ¥6,999.
