Earlier this month, Acer announced a major corporate shake up as its CEO J.T. Wang announced his resignation, combined with news that Acer would lay off seven percent of its workers. The plan was that Acer president Jim Wong would take over the CEO duties after January 1st, but now Acer has revealed that Wong has decided to resign as well.
So who will lead the world"s fourth biggest PC hardware company? As it turns out, Acer is turning to its founder, Stan Shih, for help. The company announced today that Shih will return to lead Acer, taking on the role of chairman and interim president. The CEO role will no longer be filled.
Shih founded Acer in 1976 but retired in 2004. The company said that Shih will not be paid for his time in leading the company, hopefully, out of its current economic issues. Shih added, "I will honor and complete all the public affairs and event engagements that I have committed to, but I will also fully support Acer’s ICT device business and carry out the company transformation."
Under their previous leaders, Acer said they would not release as many Windows products but would offer more devices based on Android and Chrome OS. Shih has not revealed any specific plans he has for Acer going forward.
