Acer still plans to launch Windows Phone 8 device

Several months ago, rumors hit the Internet that Acer was working on a Windows Phone 8-based smartphone. The article claimed that the phone, called the W11, would have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and would be released in October, following an official announcement in September.

However, Microsoft has yet to confirm that Acer is indeed making a Windows Phone 8 product. In June, Microsoft would only confirm that Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Huawei would be creating and selling smartphones on its new mobile OS.

Today, Digitimes reports that Acer is still committed to releasing a Windows Phone 8 product. However, Acer president Jim Wong said that the smartphone would not be released until sometime in 2013, along with five other Android-based phones.

Acer is still on track to make their own Windows Phone 8 product. This isn"t it.

Don"t expect the Acer-made Windows Phone product to come to North America though. The report says that Acer is targeting Europe and Asia for its various smartphone launches. No other information on the WP8 device has been officially revealed.

Of course, Acer is still in bed with Microsoft as far as Windows 8 is concerned, with a ton of upcoming laptops, desktops, hybrids and all-in-one PCs due to be released from the company this fall.
