Acer made its first wave of CES announcements today, and alongside of a new Swift 7, it announced the Chromebook 315. The new portable PC is among the first AMD-powered Chromebook, using either the A4-9120C or A6-9220C, which AMD also announced today.
Both CPUs are dual-core with two threads and built on 28nm process nodes. They"re meant to compete with Intel"s Celeron and Pentium chips, respectively. But they also include Radeon graphics, so performance should be boosted a bit on the graphics end.
“We are proud to expand AMD’s portfolio of products to include AMD-powered Chromebooks,” said Saeid Moshkelani, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Client Compute, AMD. “The new Acer Chromebook 315 powered by AMD A-series processors will allow consumers to do more in less time while enjoying some of the best Chromebook experiences. In partnership with Google and Acer, AMD-powered Chromebooks will deliver first-rate entertainment and premium productivity features, as well as best-in-class design to the Chromebook market.”
The Chromebook 315 includes a 15.6-inch 1080p display that Acer says is great for streaming video or playing web games, and it has a 178-degree viewing angle. On both sides of the keyboard are speakers that fire up at the user. It also has two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C ports, and it comes with 8GB RAM and up to 32GB storage.
Acer"s new Chromebook 315 will be available in North America in February, starting at $279.99, and in EMEA markets in April, starting at €349.
