It has been nine long years since the launch of Call of Duty: World at War, the last title in the franchise to be set in the Second World War. The upcoming Call of Duty: WWII will mark the return to the period, and according to Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg, more Call of Duty games set in this era are a possibility.
"Well, you know I can"t reveal things on the slate that are several years off," Hirshberg said in an interview with Game Informer. "But no I don"t necessarily see it as a one-off; I think that World War II and historical settings more broadly are very rich territory, and I think there"s every possibility that that could become an area that we explore more than once."
The last three Call of Duty games, Advanced Warfare, Black Ops III, and Infinite Warfare, were all set in the future, and according to Hirshberg, the community being "fatigued" with games set in the modern era was the reasoning behind the series" jump to the future. However, he admitted that there might have been one too many Call of Duty games set in the future, alluding to Infinite Warfare"s lackluster reception, saying the following:
"I think with the benefit of hindsight we can all agree we might have had one more future game than we needed [laughs]. Not to make any comment on the quality of the game from last year, but I think that while there were a lot of innovations and a lot of fun new things that players got to do, it was one future game too many."
While this is not definite confirmation of the franchise sticking to being set in the Second World War for its upcoming games, there is a possibility that the sales figures of Call of Duty: WWII will play a significant role in the decision.
Call of Duty: WWII is slated to launch on November 3 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
