Originally developed by Rare, GoldenEye 007 was released to much acclaim in 1997 on the Nintendo 64. Selling over eight million copies and popularizing split-screen multiplayer and scoped rifles, GoldenEye went on to become one of the highest rated FPS games of all time, and still holds a 96 ranking on Metacritic.
After suffering through many Bond titles attempting to live up to GoldenEye standards, such as "The World is Not Enough and "Quantum of Solace", gamers may finally be in for the satisfaction they have oft desired over the past 13 years.
Activision, who holds the rights for Bond game development (after purchasing the rights due to EA attempt failures), is rumoured to be in development of a GoldenEye remake. Eurogamer has reported that not only have Activision registered a domain for the upcoming Bond driving title "Bloodstone", but also goldeneyegame.com. Furthermore, Activision has apparently solicited survey answers regarding a remake, which lends credence to the rumour that Activision will release GoldenEye in Q4 of this year.

Although the fate of movie studio, MGM, and the new Bond flick is still up in the air, the gaming rights are owned by Activision. This means that a game or two may still be forthcoming. Microsoft originally had planned a port of the original to XBLA (Xbox LIVE Arcade), but after failed negotiations with Nintendo, the plan was scrapped.
Currently, the closest project resembling a GoldenEye remake is the "GoldenEye: Source" total conversion mod for Half-Life:2 The mod was released in February of last year and utilizes the Source engine to re-render the original maps and missions. The prevailing hope is that Activision will create a remake rather than a whole new game to recapture the magic of the original. Eurogamer also explains that the game should be a Wii/DS release, and may be revealed at E3.
