Adobe has been working hard to bring its Creative Cloud products to Apple"s ARM-based Macs. In November, it shipped the first beta of Photoshop, and then a couple of weeks ago, Lightroom arrived for all ARM-based PCs. Now, it"s time for its Premiere Pro video editing software to get some love.
The software is now available in beta for Macs that are powered by Apple"s M1 processor, Adobe announced today. Unfortunately, Windows wasn"t mentioned in the blog post at all, so it would seem like that"s going to take a while longer. We did reach out to Adobe to see if we can get some clarification on this.
Obviously, native apps run a lot better than those that use Rosetta 2; however, you might run into issues with the native app"s issues being that it"s such an early release. Adobe did provide a list of issues:
- Tapping the tool selector on the Touch Bar (MacBook Pro) can cause a crash
- Premiere Pro can crash on launch if set to Chinese localization
- Team Projects collaborators can appear offline
- Dragging markers in the Timeline or Program Monitor can cause a flicker in the Program Monitor
- Estimated file size when exporting can be incorrect by an order of magnitude
- Project Manager has an incomplete set of presets as well as some extraneous presets
- Using Lumetri color controls while the Program or Source Monitor are set to Multi-Camera view can cause the application to hang
There are also features that aren"t functioning at all yet:
- Learn Panel and in-app tutorials
- Support for control surfaces
- Not all video & audio effects have been ported
- Legacy Titler (use the essential graphics workflow instead)
- Motion Graphics Templates authored in After Effects (Premiere Pro authored MOGRTs work)
- Old caption workflow (please use the new captioning workflow which is available in both beta versions, Apple Silicon and Intel)
- Interchange formats (XML, AAF, OMF)
- Capture panel & preferences
- Device Control preferences
- Third party plug-in support including panels, effects, scripting, and transmit
- Libraries panel
There are also some things that you need to know. It uses a new captions workflow, which means you"ll have to upgrade your project. But there"s some bad news too. There are no beta versions of After Effects or Media Encoder for Apple Silicon Macs. If you use Dynamic Link with After Effects or Queue to Media Encoder, that"s going to be an issue.
But also, you can use the Intel versions of all of these apps, including Premiere Pro. Integration with Media Encoder and After Effects works fine if you"re using the Intel beta too.
