iDevice owners hoping to start the new year on time were treated to a shock this morning as an iOS glitch caused one-off alarms to fail.
Dozens of cranky, overtired iPhone and iPod touch owners took to Twitter to complain this morning following the software glitch, which according to Redmond Pie impacts not only devices running iOS 4.2.1, but earlier versions as well. Devices running iOS 3.x appear to be unaffected.
Ironically, iOS 4.2.1, released in November, included a fix for a daylight savings bug that caused iPhone and iPod touch alarms to go off an hour late.
Testing by Neowin and 9to5Mac has revealed the bug also extends beyond January 1, with one-off alarms also failing on January 2. The glitch appears to rectify itself on January 3. Apple has confirmed to Engadget that it is aware of the problem and has advised users to set recurring alarms to avoid the bug. Third-party alarm clock apps are also being recommended as a way to dodge the problem.
""We"re aware of an issue related to non repeating alarms set for January 1 or 2. Customers can set recurring alarms for those dates and all alarms will work properly beginning January 3,"" a spokesperson said.
