Amazon has been one of the biggest players in the smart home market for a while now thanks to its Alexa digital assistant and its Echo products. In October, the company made a big push for its own ecosystem with an array of new devices, including speakers, screens, and even a smart clock. Now, Amazon has announced its latest investment in the smart home market, with the acquisition of eero.
eero makes Wi-Fi routers that work in a mesh configuration to cover entire homes with Wi-Fi, which is a big part of keeping smart devices fully functional. eero products have a 4.6-star rating on Amazon.com, according to the company"s press release, so it would seem that the company is very well regarded.
With the acquisition, both companies hope to make smart homes easier to set up and use. Nick Weaver, eero"s CEO and co-founder said:
"From the beginning, eero’s mission has been to make the technology in homes just work (...) We started with WiFi because it’s the foundation of the modern home. Every customer deserves reliable and secure WiFi in every room. By joining the Amazon family, we’re excited to learn from and work closely with a team that is defining the future of the home, accelerate our mission, and bring eero systems to more customers around the globe."
It"s not currently clear if Amazon will keep the eero brand going forward or if it will launch its own-branded solutions in the future, but it"s clear that the company is trying to promote its smart home ecosystem with this purchase. As of yet, it"s now known how much the deal is worth.
