Amazon has launched a new programme that tags sustainable products with the Climate Pledge Friendly tag. The firm said that 25,000 products that have one or more of 19 sustainability certifications will be tagged.
Amazon says the new initiative will make it easier for customers to shop for more sustainable products as the world grapples with man-made global warming and environmental destruction. The announcement comes several weeks after the firm announced it was deploying 1,800 electric vans in its European delivery fleet to lessen its carbon footprint.
The Climate Pledge Friendly range of products will include groceries, household items, fashion, beauty products, and personal electronic products from brands such as Seventh Generation, Burt’s Bees Baby, and HP. Climate Pledge Friendly product pages will be clearly marked and include additional sustainability information.
Commenting on the launch, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said:
“Climate Pledge Friendly is a simple way for customers to discover more sustainable products that help preserve the natural world. With 18 external certification programs and our own Compact by Design certification, we’re incentivizing selling partners to create sustainable products that help protect the planet for future generations.”
Some products included in the Climate Pledge Friendly programme will also ship without excess air and water; this is known as Compact by Design. While it doesn’t affect individual products, the removal of excess air and water can lead to a big reduction in carbon emissions.
