Amazon is selling the Moto G4 Play for $99, but there's a catch

Back in July, Amazon began selling two Android phones at a discount: the Moto G4 and the Blu R1 HD. Reserved for Prime members, the discounts were contingent on the customer opting to see ads on the lock screen.

Now, Amazon has added Lenovo"s latest mid-range device to its ad-supported lineup, the Moto G4 Play. You can grab one for $99.99 (assuming that you"re a Prime member), and the listing states that the phone will be released on September 15.

The Moto G4 Play is similar to the higher-end Moto G3 model, which includes a 5-inch 720p IPS LCD, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 5MP front camera, and a Snapdragon 410 chipset. It also contains a larger 2800mAh battery, and a lower resolution rear camera, coming in at 8MP.

The phone will only be available in black, but if you buy the ad-free model for $149.99, you"ll have the option between black and white. Of course, it"s not immediately clear how easy it is to remove Amazon"s ads. Some users have reported that it"s as easy as installing a third party lock screen. Either way, Android is extremely customizable, so it"s also possible to install a third party ROM.
