Amazon"s Fire TV is already a staple of various digital content including video games, TV shows, movies, and even music streaming from Apple Music. Now, a new report from The Information suggests the video streaming device may be expanding its offerings by adding digital news content from several TV networks, accessible through a free app.
The video news app is said to be slated for launch in the next few months and it is seen as Amazon"s take on Roku"s free live news content service that was added to the Roku Channel app in April 2018. That service offers news content from ABC News, Cheddar, People TV, and more channels.
In an attempt to differentiate its offering, Amazon"s video news app will supposedly be providing local news content in addition to nationwide coverage. Since it"s a free service, it will likely be running ads alongside news programs.
Specific details about the company"s plans are still limited for now, but the report claims Amazon has already approached a number of news organizations for potential distribution partnerships. The ultimate goal, according to the report, is to incorporate the news app into Alexa.
