Amazon slashes 50% off Echo, and 40% off Fire 7 tablet, in Prime Day deals-fest

This week, Amazon is celebrating its third Prime Day, an annual deals extravaganza, in which it offers big savings on a vast range of products, exclusively for those who subscribe to its Prime membership program.

Amazon said that it"s kicking off its latest Prime Day six hours early this year, giving members 30 hours of deals, starting at 6pm PT / 9pm ET in the United States, and 6pm BST in the UK. Amazon is offering numerous discounts on some of its own products, including 50% off its popular and increasingly capable Echo smart speaker, reducing its price from $179.99 to $89.99.

The Echo Dot also gets $15 off, falling to $34.99 - its lowest price to date - but there are big savings available on other Amazon devices too. The Kindle Paperwhite e-reader will get $30 off, reducing it to $89.99, while the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition tablet will get a discount of $40, bringing its price down to $89.99. Amazon"s best-selling tablet, the Fire 7, will get 40% off, reducing its price by $20, from $49.99 to just $29.99.

Besides the discounts on Amazon"s devices, there will be savings available on a huge variety of other products, including up to 50% off a range of grocery items; up to 70% off select Samsonite two-piece spinner sets; and up to 40% off furniture, mattresses and rugs, among many other deals. Amazon highlighted some of the discounts that will be available for TV buyers, for example:

  • Newly released Element 55-inch 4K Ultra HD smart LED TV – Amazon Fire TV Edition, only $399.99
  • 25% off select TCL smart TVs, starting at $119.99 for a 28-inch
