Amazon is by no means a stranger when it comes to delivering and creating video content but it looks like the company wants to expand in a big way in this market.
Amazon has just announced that the online retailer will start creating original theatrical movies which will debut in brick and mortar cinemas before eventually ending up on its Prime video service.
According to the press release the company is looking to create at least 12 movies per year. Amazon Studios VP Roy Price explained:
Not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience.”
While the company has seen moderate success with its original series, Amazon still has a lot to prove when it comes to “real movies”. We’ll be keeping an eye out for these original films to start rolling out by the end of the year.
