Last week, AMD released its new RX 500 family of Polaris-based graphics cards, and now, the company has unveiled a new edition of its dual-GPU graphics card, Radeon Pro Duo. However, keep in mind that this is a workstation card, aimed at professional content creators rather than the regular consumer.
Unlike last year"s dual Fiji GPU powered Radeon Pro Duo, this year"s edition contains two of the company"s newest 14nm Polaris GPUs, with each one consisting of 16GB of memory, 2304 Stream Processors, 128 Texture units, and 32 ROPs.
Thanks to its Polaris upgrade, the new card also draws much less power and expels less heat than its predecessor, which arrived with a built-in liquid cooler, and needed a whopping 350W of power drawn through three eight-pin power connectors to function. Meanwhile, the new Pro Duo uses a simple blower fan design, and only needs an eight-pin and a six-pin power connector, collectively drawing 250W.
However, the more efficient and cooler design has the drawback of making the graphics card significantly less powerful than last year"s offering. As compared to last year"s 16 teraflops of graphics processing power, the new Pro Duo only provides 11.45 teraflops. The upside is that to make up for this lost performance in the price department, as the graphics card is $500 cheaper than last year.
The Radeon Pro Duo dual-GPU workstation graphics card will cost a cool $999, with its official release slated for the end of May.
