AMD outlines anti-Intel plans

AMD believes that while Intel may be ahead in moving its chip production to .13 micron, it will be able to switch its entire production over faster. In the second half of next year, says AMD, it will move its production to silicon on insulator (SOI).It will migrate its two-way multiprocessing AMD Athlon to .13 micron in the first half of next year.Samples for Hammer are out but we understand at .18 micron. Hammer, according to AMD, is still scheduled for the second half of next year - this suggests the firm will migrate Hammer to .13 micron and SOI, in the second half of next year. Its .18 micron Athlon/Palomino technology will end at between 1.7 and 2GHz, but moving that to a .13 micron process will provide between 20 to 30 per cent improved performance, with SOI giving it a further boost. The schedule appears to be that in the four quarter we"ll see .13 micron wafer starts, the first products on .13 micron will be Durons in the first half of next year, and by the end of next year Dresden will have converted completely to .13 micron, and manufacture between 50 to 60 million CPUs per year, after that.
