AMD confirmed earlier this year that the processor maker will branch out into creating chips using ARM designs in addition to its x86 processor business. This week, AMD offered up a roadmap of its future embedded processor plans, which include releasing its first ARM chips in 2014.
AMD"s plans list "Hierofalcon," a 64-bit system-on-a-chip solution which will have eight ARM Cortex-A57 CPUs and an expected clock speed of 2GHz. It"s expected to enter full production by the second half of 2014. However, most of its embedded processors will still be based on the x86 design. That includes "Bald Eagle," the code name for a processor that can be used as both an APU and CPU. It"s supposed to have up to four of the company"s Steamroller CPU cores. It"s due for release in the first half of 2014.
Another x86 APU that the company will have out in the first half of next year is "Steppe Eagle." The system-on-a-chip solution will have enhanced Jaguar CPU cores along with its "AMD Graphics Core Next GPU architecture." Finally, AMD will release the "Adelaar" discrete graphics chip in 2014 which will have 2GB of memory and offer support for DirectX 11.1 and OpenGL 4.2. It will be in devices that run both Windows and Linux.
