AMD Sempron to arrive on August 17th

If the Inquirer is right AMD has stopped production on some of its processors. This includes all Athlon MP processors, and all processors slower than the Athlon XP 2700+. Whenever AMD decides to clear out its current lineup it usually means something new is coming; that something is Sempron. Sempron is AMDs new value processor, or in other words the new Duron!

We have some new information about the future life of socket 462 and the much-beloved Athlon XP. AMD already announced the funny named Sempr0n chips but was not specific what will happen with existing XP chips. We received the info that the Athlon XP 2700+ and slower chips are going to be canned. Actually, the last order for 2700+ and slower could be placed until yesterday Sunday, June 27, 2004. If you want more of those chips you will have to find someone with some leftovers.

AMD is also canning all Athlon MP CPUs since its Opteron sales are doing great and they don"t want to hurt new Opterons with leftovers from Athlon MP. Athlon MP, you were a good chip, rest in peace. As for the Athlon XP 2800+, 3000+ and 3200+ you will be able to buy there in future until a yet undecided day when they will go the way of all chips as well. This won"t happen anytime soon. AMD decided to leave FSB 333 to co-exist with FSB 400 CPUs and motherboards. Not all motherboards can work with FSB 400 as you might know.
