According to Mercury Research, a company specializing in PC component market research, Advanced Micro Devices has surpassed 20 percent of the desktop PC market share for the first time since 2001. AMD came in with 20.4 percent of the worldwide desktop PC market share in the third quarter report for this year. Intel still holds a commanding lead at 77.5 percent.
In related news, after introducing its Turion 64 notebook platform this August, shipments of AMD notebook processors are up 55% for this quarter.
Intel holds 80.8 percent of the global CPU market, which includes both desktops and notebooks, followed by AMD with 17.8 percent. Intel"s share slid 1.4 percentage points while AMD enjoyed an increase of 1.6 percent overall.
