AMD today took off the wraps of a new midrange offering in its lineup of dedicated graphics card: the $279 RX 590, which is to serve as an upgrade to the RX 580 announced by the company in April of last year.
In terms of specifications, the GPU is based on AMD"s 12nm process and boasts 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. It also has 2,034 Stream Processors, alongside 36 compute units. The card is aimed at the midrange market, and will likely be more than enough for running most games at 1080p and maybe even 1440p. For higher resolutions, of course, you may want to look at AMD and Nvidia"s more expensive wares.
Compared to the RX 580, the card is actually very similar in terms of design - apart from, of course, the move from a 14nm process to a 12nm one. Alongside that, the RX 590 also features 15% higher boost clock speeds than the older model and an overall performance boost of 12%. It can also push as much as 7.1 TFLOPS compared to the peak compute of 6.17 TFLOPS on the 580.
Various OEM models of the RX 590 should be hitting retailers soon, with Asus, Sapphire and others making their own tweaks and modifications to the card.
