Analyst predicts Xbox One to cost $399 / PS4 will be $349 at launch

Would you pay $399 for this game console?

We are just a week away from the official E3 2013 press conferences of Microsoft and Sony, where they will reveal more game-related details on their upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. But what will these next generation products cost when they launch, hopefully, by the end of the year?

Gameindustry International reports that, in a research note sent out today to investors, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicts that, in terms of their materials, the PS4 costs $275, while the Xbox One costs $325 for its hardware. Pachter extrapolates that the retail cost of the PS4 will be cheaper than the Xbox One at launch, with a price of $349 for the PS4 compared to the Xbox One"s predicted launch price of $399.

Pachter added that Microsoft could subsidize the price of the Xbox One via a Xbox Live contract, among other methods. Microsoft previously launched a way to buy an Xbox 360 for $99 with a two year Xbox Live contract. Sony could also do the same for the PS4, but Pachter added that Sony has no prior history of that business model with previous PlayStation consoles.

Speaking of older consoles, Pachter predicts the price of the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will be reduced by $50 each later this year, while the price of Nintendo"s Wii console could be cut down to just $99.
