At the beginning of November - a few weeks after Google officially announced Android 5.0 - HTC promised that it would deliver the Lollipop update to its flagship handsets "within 90 days". To live up to that promise, HTC will have to roll out the update by February 2 - and it seems that the company may actually be preparing to push it out a bit sooner.
Android developer LlabTooFer, who has occasionally leaked accurate info in the past, tweeted this week that the final Android 5.0 build for the HTC One M8 is expected to arrive within the next fortnight, adding that the build should be in the 4.16.401x range.
While only the One M8 is mentioned here, HTC has said that both the M8 and the older M7 will get the Lollipop update within that 90-day window.
However, it is extremely unlikely - virtually impossible, in fact - that HTC will succeed in completing the rollout to all handsets by February 2. Carriers tend to drag their feet when it comes to testing and approving updates, which will no doubt prolong the rollout to all users, as it always does.
Large manufacturers like HTC also tend to push out updates in stages, with certain markets and models receiving the update first, and availability gradually expanding in subsequent weeks. Assuming the company hits its target of readying Android 5.0 for the One M8 and M7 before February 2, it could still be several months before each and every handset is upgraded.
