Today, Google held an event in San Francisco, at which it unveiled two new smartphones: the flagship 5.7-inch Nexus 6P, and the 5.2-inch Nexus 5X. The two handsets are the company"s "showcase" devices for its latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system, which it formally announced today.
But while the newest Android handsets will come with 6.0 pre-installed, there are plenty of other devices already out there waiting for the latest OS to arrive as an update. Google announced today that it will begin the Android 6.0 rollout on October 5 - although that cat actually slipped out of the bag a few days ago, thanks to a Canadian carrier.
Starting next week, the update will be available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Nexus Player. As expected, Google did not announce details of when its partners will roll out the update - manufacturers and carriers will reveal their own plans in the weeks and months ahead.
However, given that just 21% of Android devices have made it to Android 5.x Lollipop builds - a year after that version was first announced - many are unlikely to ever get a taste of that Marshmallow goodness.
