Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow heads to Samsung's first-gen Galaxy A5

In June, Samsung began rolling out the Marshmallow update to the Galaxy A5 (2016). Now, ten months after Marshmallow was first released, the update is making its way to the original version of the same handset, which was unveiled in late-2014.

Android 6.0.1 is now making its way to the first-gen Galaxy A5 (model SM-A500FU) in various European markets, as well as South Africa.

Along with the various improvements that Google baked into Marshmallow, Samsung has added its own tweaks and enhancements, including the latest version of its TouchWiz interface. The update also brings the latest Android security patches.

As SamMobile notes, given the age of the original Galaxy A5, this may well be the last major Android update that it receives, as most manufacturers don"t continue to upgrade their handsets for longer than around two years.
