Google has been having a few problems with Android 8.0 Oreo since it launched, the latest being an issue where Pixel and Nexus phones have been prematurely disabling mobile data. Luckily, Google has found a fix.
The issue involved a feature released in Oreo designed to "restrict unnecessary battery drain when there was limited or no data connectivity on the phone," Pixel Connectivity Product Manager Naheed Vohra said in response to a post on Google"s Pixel forums. He said a fix will be rolling out over the air in November"s security update for the OS.
The bug automatically disabled mobile data when users hit the predetermined cap set by their mobile carriers. Unfortunately, that affected apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook, which are designed to keep working even if the cap is reached. However, some users had complained that the OS was even disabling mobile data before they hit their maximum allotment.
The feature is apparently not live worldwide yet. "Clearly, there are some corner cases we missed and we are going to gradually roll out the feature around the world based on your feedback," Vohra said.
The OS had a similar issue reported last month where mobile data was being drained while users were connected to wifi. The bug needed to be fixed manually by disabling the ‘mobile data always active" feature.
