It didn"t come as a huge surprise, but today, Google confirmed that its next major OS update will be known as Android 8.0 Oreo. The announcement came after months of testing, including four Developer Previews - but of course, device owners are now eager to find out when they can get their hands on the official update.
Google said today that those on the Android Beta Program will receive the final version of Oreo today, and it also published new system images to manually flash onto supported devices. The official over-the-air rollout will take a bit longer, though.
The company said that Android 8.0 builds for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P have now "entered carrier testing", adding that it expects to begin rolling out updates to those devices "in phases over the next several weeks". Updates for the Pixel C and Nexus Player will be made available within the same rough timeframe.
Android 8.0 may well be the last major update for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, as Google has only guaranteed OS updates for the two handsets until next month. However, both devices will continue to receive security patches until at least September 2018.
Details of what to expect in the Android 8.0 Oreo update can be found here.
