Android 8.1 is now available for the Essential PH-1

Over the past several months, Essential has been beta testing Android Oreo for its PH-1 handset. Now, in what comes as a bit of a surprise, the firm has announced that an official update to Android 8.1 is available for download.

The update, which can be downloaded over-the-air (OTA), will come in at 275.8MB, bringing some new features for those upgrading from Android Nougat like smart text selection, instant apps support, and picture-in-picture for videos. The OS will also start up much faster than its predecessor and will have the latest security patches from March. Essential has also fixed the "slow scrolling jitter" issue and added dynamic calendar and clock icons.

As mentioned prior, the update will arrive OTA and if you haven"t received it yet, your option is to be patient. Those that are using a Sprint or Telus version of the PH-1 may not see the update immediately, as it has to go through carrier testing before it can be released.
