Google revealed on Thursday that their application store for the mobile operating system Android is still 70,000 applications strong, and not 100,000 as many others have been reporting.
During Google"s conference call today for their second quarter earnings, the company explained that the Android Marketplace now has more than 70,000 applications, still a far cry from the 100,000 apps AndroLib -- one of the biggest unofficial Android application libraries on the Internet -- claimed were now available.
AndroLib initially said that more than 100,000 applications were available in the Marketplace, and that 1 billion downloads had occurred - but notes the figures were only an estimate.
"We want to emphasize that it [the application count] is an estimate and Google could prove us wrong at anytime by releasing the actual number," the AndroLib team wrote on their blog today.
In comparison, Apple"s iTunes App Store, for their iOS devices including the iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone, now boasts more than 225,000 applications, which have been downloaded more than 5 billion times.
So while Google isn"t yet celebrating reaching the 100,000 mark just yet, they still remain extremely excited about the news that more than 160,000 Android devices are being activated each day across the globe, resulting in a device activated approximately every 2 seconds.
