Android usage: 0.5% of Google Play devices are now on the latest version of Nougat

Google has published its latest monthly breakdown of platform usage, showing the proportion of active devices running each version of the Android OS. The data is collected during a 7-day period that ended on May 2, and it only represents devices that have visited the Google Play Store during that period, so to be clear, it does not include AOSP devices.

Version Codename API Last month This month Change
2.3.3 - 2.3.7 Gingerbread 10 0.9% 1.0% 0.1
4.0.3 - 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich 15 0.9% 0.8% -0.1
4.1.x Jelly Bean 16 3.5% 3.2% -0.3
4.2.x 17 5.1% 4.6% -0.5
4.3 18 1.5% 1.3% -0.2
4.4 KitKat 19 20.0% 18.8% -1.2
5.0 Lollipop 21 9.0% 8.7% -0.3
5.1 22 23.0% 23.3% 0.3
6.0 Marshmallow 23 31.2% 31.2% -
7.0 Nougat 24 4.5% 6.6% 2.1
7.1 25 0.4% 0.5% 0.1

This month"s numbers are certainly more mixed than last month, which only saw an increase for Android 7.0 Nougat. Of course, 7.0 Nougat was still the big winner of the month, rising by the same 2.1, but 7.1 also saw a minor bump of 0.1, after being stagnant for a month at 0.4%.

Lollipop remains the most used named version of Android, as it"s still at 32%. Marshmallow didn"t move either, staying at 31.2%. Naturally, Marshmallow will surpass Lollipop at some point, but this is not the month for that.

Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean continued their steady declines, which is normal for aging versions of the OS. What"s really odd is that Gingerbread saw an increase, bouncing back to a solid 1%.

Android 7.0 Nougat was now released almost nine months ago, and 7.1 is almost half a year old. While the former is finally starting to gain some traction, one might wonder if OEMs are working on 7.1 updates at all, especially with Android O right around the corner.
