Angry Birds, coming to a cinema near you! John Cohen producing

There are two types of game-to-movie adaptions that exist; ones that work well and ones that don’t. Far be it from us to get into the artsy world of the film critic, most game-to-movie adaptions aren’t a true representation of the games they are made from and ultimately fall flat in the faces of their fans. But Angry Birds; could it succeed where others have failed?

Well Rovio seem to think so, announcing on Angry Birds third birthday that ‘Despicable Me’ Producer John Cohen has signed on to produce the upcoming flick. Rovio Entertainment CEO, Mikael Hed has said:

John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock. With John’s hands-on producer background and David´s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.

David Maisel will serve as Executive Producer for the film. He is currently the Chairman of Marvel Studios and was Executive Producer on Iron Man. As Rovio is producing and financing the film outside of the studio system, they are retaining creative control and producing a film they feel will complement the quality of the Angry Birds games. Cohen has said:

I’m so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael, David, and Rovio’s incredibly talented game developers and artists. From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I"ve personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie.

Is this not just the best? This reporter thinks so!

Now if Rovio, Cohen and Maisel are able to flesh out the Angry Birds story line for longer than four minutes, they might be onto a winner. Angry Birds has already been immortalised in animated form with the seasonal and promotional shorts available on Rovio’s YouTube channel.

It’s now up to Rovio to keep Angry Birds as fresh and relevant for the next three years as they have the past three.
