Two years ago, on December 11, 2009, a game from a then unknown developer called Rovio appeared on Apple"s iOS App Store. It was called Angry Birds and it let the player fire strange looking birds at structures with the idea to knock them down and rack up achievements and points.
Since then the game has become a massive pop culture phenomenon. The game itself has been downloaded 500 million times, and has been ported to a number of other mobile platforms along with the PC and Mac. It"s also made Rovio very rich.
Today, Rovio announced that owners of the iOS version of Angry Birds can download 15 new birthday themed levels for the game along with new birthday achievements and new menu graphics. The new levels will be released for the game"s other platforms in the coming weeks.
In the real world, Rovio is working with retailers to offer some birthday events. From 11 am to 3 pm today, the Barnes and Noble bookstore will hold some Angry Birds events, including a scavenger hunt, raffles and more. If you go to Toys R US today you can get 25 percent off Angry Birds plush toys. You can also get a code to download an exclusive Google Chrome bonus level. Other events will be held in the UK and Japan today as well.
